Shopping for the Cushman Scooters: The Cushman - A Scooter Classic

Cushman Motor Works was founded between 1901 and 1902 for the purpose of producing farm engines. In order to increase sales on these engines, Cushman installed a motor onto a scooter, which launched their scooter industry. In the mid-30's through the mid-60's, Cushman produced 2 and 3-wheeled scooters for the public and military. In the 50's, Cushman extended its sales to Sears who sold them for mail-order sales.

One of the most well-known Cushman scooters was the Eagle which was first produced in 1950 or 1951 and production ran until 1965. In 1961, Cushman and the Italian manufacturer of the Vespa scooter arrived at an agreement to allow Cushman to import and sell some of the Vespa scooters at various Cushman locations. The dealerships who did participate in selling the Cushman-Vespa had great success over the next few years, selling over 3,000 scooters. Although Cushman still exists in Nebraska, it is only producing industrial-type vehicles.
